Homework #1:

Throughout time, obviously art and art forms have changed and evolved according to the latest technology and trends. Even in the modern day, we’re always “inspired” what artists and graphic designers are displaying in art museums and on social media. More times than not, we subconsciously break the rules of copyrights and plagiarism. However, we continue to use these same, poor habits merely because we are not caught, or because there is no fine line between what is allowed and disallowed.

Reading the comic allowed me to see the rules and challenges that filmmakers and producers must face and follow. I honestly had no idea that requesting rights was such a financial investment, and probably end up being more expensive than the professional actors. However, I do feel as though people think that their work is worth more than it actually is, and hype it up in price just to take advantage of the situation. Although the tremendous profit might encourage people to attain rights on their artwork, it also discourages people from being “inspired” by their pieces of art. I feel like the central argument in all of this is overarching issue of what defines originality. If originality is considered a piece of work that is not plagiarized and completely not inspired by an artist or author, then original pieces of work are slim to none at this point in time.

The comic also made me realize that I personally have broken a ton of these copyright laws, which is clearly an example of bad appropriation. I’m an entrepreneur and designer of a custom shoe company, SneaxByArish. Although my artwork is “one-of-a-kind,” I gain all of my inspiration from famous pop artists, and any image that is public on Google. For example, I have copied Keith Harring’s designs on more than five pairs of shoes, and never once has anyone caught me. Obviously, I realize that copying his work isn’t legal or ethical, but I feel as though there are no outside sources accusing me of breaking any law. I’ve also made shoes with Hello Kitty and several Disney characters, all of which are completely copyrighted designs, except they’re still public. However, the shoes that I create are based on ideas of what customers put in the item description of their order form. So, if that is the case, is it my fault or the customers’ fault that I’m using copyrighted designs? If I’m practicing forms of poor appropriation, how would someone like me be able to practice forms of good appropriation?

Artists like Sherry Levine and Kathleen Gilge appropriate other pieces of artwork, by basically restoring and altering other art pieces, in order to make it their own and “original.” Although their pieces of artwork might not be “original” to its core, it does have its own separate meaning, purpose and message for the viewer. At this point in time, originality to a T is merely impossible to find and create. Our brains are triggered with inspiration from art forms and life forms that surround us every day. Inspiration from other artists can allow the modern day people to continue to build off of old ideas, and create new ones, just like the process of creative destruction.

Project #1:

I completely started over .... :(

I colorized the image.

I then gave the pin-up girl a mermaid tail, placed her on top of a cupcake, and then placed the cupcake onto a plate.

annie rishty 5.jpg
Then, I duplicated one of the sprinkles, and made it appear as though her tail was flinging the sprinkles.
I then added a background, and created some shadows.

More shadows were created on the plate, and then I added ocean water to the bottom of the plate, and then added a couple of goldfish to tie in the whole image.

Writing Exercise:

In this image, I see a couple that has escaped to the middle of nowhere. There are aspects of the man and woman that appear vibrant in color, such as the bouquet of flower, the flower hair accessory, the woman's skin and hair color, and the man's rainbow, stripped sash. However, there appears to be a darkness in color of the woman's shoes, the mans suit, hat and skin color. Pieces of the picture appear to be from an old photograph, while other pieces of the picture appear to be colorized and modernized.

The sound of the wind swooshing through the woman's hair gave her the chills on her bare neck. She comforted herself by leaning on her husband, who is wearing a rough tweed, dark suit. Her soft and silky hair rests on the crackled cheek of her husband, as his right arm leans behind her shoulder to support her body weight. Her skin glowed against the magenta flowers her husband bought for her that morning before they escaped into the middle of nowhere. The shadow against the grass, outlining the bodies of the couple, will only last as long as they stand there in that spot. Her naked ankles felt cold against the heavy winds. The aroma of the freshly cut grass almost had a sour smell for the couple to tolerate.

2. An application that can retrieve an individuals public and private information just by taking a picture
3. A device that can detect an individual's thoughts, properly filter out unrelated thoughts, and then provide him or her with concrete tools that will assist him or her execute the desired task.

I believe that my augmented reality project can really get people thinking of the food that they consume. Something as simple as a Milano cookie, which is 60 calories, is a lot harder to burn via exercise then some may think. The reality is that more times than not, we are mindless when we eat, and then we end up eating countless calories. Those who want to lose weight need to understand that you must burn more calories than you consume. My AR project outlines the thought process that all individuals should have, especially if they are looking to get into better shape. If executed correctly, the exercises and reps I have chosen and demonstrated through my GIF animations, the individual should have burned all of 60 calories if he or she consumes one Milano cookie.

My project also demonstrates a great variety of my interests, including marketing and fitness. I love how my Augmented Reality project utilizes an inverse-marketing tactic, and basically discouraging viewers to not eat the product being shown.

Anti-Monument Homework

After reading the assigned article, I'm very excited to get started on this project. I appreciate the concept of the anti-monument, as it has the potential to have a deeper meaning than a traditional monument, while also not explicitly showing and honoring an individual. In a sense, an anti-monument is the literal form of "showing, not telling." The meaning of an anti-monument is completely up to the discretion of the viewer, which basically means that we have the ability to create whatever we want, like a sculpture in art class. The sculpture can mean something different to me, the artist, than it can to a viewer, like a classmate. Anti-monuments can also be more subtle, and not as prominent; the sculpture is more of an art piece that is incorporated into the everyday environment rather than a destination or landmark. I also love that an anti-monument can be completely abstract because similar to its meaning, an abstract piece of art can mean something different between the artist and a viewer. The potential to create an anti-monument is endless, and is an incredible opportunity for artists to express their opinions and thoughts and transform it into a sculpture that could potentially become something meaningful to a random individual.

Anti-Monument Project

This project was very exciting to execute because the meaning behind the anti-moment is very substantial to me. First of all, I wanted to create a monument that was a tree, and make it appear similar to the nature surrounding it; I don't want it to stand out to everyone, I want it to stand out to those who are looking and are aware of their external surroundings. With this tree, there are three special elements with it that are unique to its particular meaning. The tree is also a representation of women being part of mother-nature; women are natural creatures and go through natural processes within her life. By the roots of the tree, there are a pair of stilettos pumps, which portrays female dominance and existence in the world. I'm not sure if men would necessarily notice something so subtle at the bottom of the tree, but I woman would realize something different, and moreover see that the pumps are in a different, rose gold metal texture. Along the long trunk of the tree, there are a pair of breasts in the same rose gold metal texture. I wanted to display the bare breast on the tree in order encourage women to be proud of their breasts. I want to remind women that they are the reason why children and born, fed and raised a certain way; I want women to be proud of being a woman. I personally think that if men saw this anti-monument, they would assume that the breasts were actually eyeballs. Then, as you rise to the top of the anti-monument, you see the tree branches. The tree branch shapes are proportioned to look similar to the ends of brass instruments, but rather than blowing out sound, women internalize their surroundings from pressures of society, family, and stereotypical norms. This anti-monument is for the women that don't feel as though they are heard; the anti-monument is not meant to make a huge impact on society, but a subtle one. The rose gold metal texture is very similar in color to the natural wood color because I do not want the breasts and pumps to stand out, but I want them to appear and feel different.
